In February of 2022, Kaylyn and I made another visit to one of our favorite places—Grand Teton National Park— but this time in the dead of winter. Something drew us to the idea of seeing our beloved, jagged mountain range in a quieter off-season setting. While park visitors were few, the wildlife was plentiful!
Moose, wolves, eagles, beavers in their dams, and all making their way through deep blankets of snow. The grandest, of wildlife encounters was the Bighorn Sheep. Just north of Jackson, adjacent to the National Elk Refuge, we came upon a herd of Bighorn Sheep making their way along the sheer cliff-sides.

It started with just one head peaking over the ridge, and before long, there were over a dozen scrambling along the cliffs! Slowly we began to notice more and more Bighorn Sheep coming out of camouflage in the rocks— from small juveniles to fast moving rams.
It didn’t take long for things to get heated. A group of rams started butting heads along the cliff-side, sometimes coming downhill at full speed. I could hear the crack of their horns a half second delayed because of their distance up on the ridge, and then the echo coming back within the rocky arena.

Reflecting on what we witnessed, from nature’s violence to serine silent landscapes, it is truly amazing what you can find within a National Park. Grand Teton National Park remains a favorite for Kaylyn and I, not only for it’s majestic mountain peaks, but also for its untamed wildlife.

Where were we…?

Hi guys. What a great trip! I loved the pics and they brought back memories of trips we’ve made there. We were there in October. It was a beautiful fall day. Diann, being fully recovered from her hip surgery, is able to hike now and I have to work to keep up with her. We hiked around Jenny Lake to the waterfall and had a great afternoon. I too love the Grand Tetons but I have to say that my favorite is still Yellowstone. I go every year sometimes 2 or 3 times. I have had many cool adventures. We love reading about your adventures please keep up the emails. We are in AZ now and will return to KIngston in June. We’re going on a cruise to the eastern Med in May. Love you both Larry and Diann
