There’s a feeling I get when I look to the west
After months of deliberating, searching, and saving… we finally decided on purchasing our first home in Hillsboro, Oregon! Why, you might ask? Excellent question! Neither of us have family living in Oregon, with Kaylyn growing up in Utah and Dylan growing up in California – you could call our new home “neutral ground.” The key requirements that made us choose the Portland area was; affordability housing market, proximity to a large international airport, local to an LDS Temple, short flight to both of our parents, and plentiful hiking/camping all around us.
First step was to assemble a crack team to find our new home and it did take us a while to find the ones to match our style and vibe. While we were visiting the area we picked our realtor and lender AND we decided on the Beaverton/Tigard/Hillsboro to be our new neck of the woods.
For those who have driven from Utah to Oregon, you’ll know there’s not much to see. But when you throw in a massive accident that closed the 84 Northbound route through Idaho, a 12hr drive turns into 17hrs!!!!
Since our movers were scheduled to be at our new house the next morning, we had to push through the night and arrive at 2am. The only option through was a small two lane highway taking us through Bend, OR where we pushed the poor rental truck to the limit over high mountain passes. Keep in mind that this was a full 30ft truck with our Subaru in tow. But hey, at least the cab had A/C!

You never really know how much you have until you have to pack it all up in one truck. We filled an entire 30ft moving truck with all of our furniture, boxes, stuff, stuff, and stuff. As you can see it wasn’t a professional packing job but it did the trick and luckily nothing important broke.

Now that we’re set up in our new home, we’re exploring the area as much as we can – from the coast to Mt Hood. Keep up with us on our posts as we trek around the Northwest!
